Back in '81, I got the fat envelope. My Mom and I lived upstairs from my grandparents, and I lost it! Jumping up and down, screaming, the whole nine. My Grandmother called and asked me why I was making all that noise--when I told her "I got into Stanford--with enough scholarship money for me to go!" she was pleased.
The next day, I got the fat envelope from Harvard--but my mind was made up--if I could leave Chicago, I was going to California. Over dinner, my Grandmother asked if anything had happened that day. When I told her I had gotten into Harvard, she fell to her knees and said, 'Thank you, Jesus!"
She went to her grave never understanding how I could've turned down Harvard for someplace in California.
Now kids get the first notification via email, though a big packet is overnighted to all admits. Somehow, the email doesn't seem the same...
