The words in this article are pretty inscrutable as far as the likelihood of Bloomgren leaving, but its existence makes me think he's more likely to leave than in the past:

Bloomgren said he’s had inquiries about 10 college head coaching jobs over the years and has been offered an NFL assistant’s job “every year I’ve been here.”
He has interviewed for some of those jobs, but won’t discuss how close he has come to leaving Stanford or which school or pro team has tendered the offers.

I for one really hope that Chip Kelly goes elsewhere. Niners stint notwithstanding, i think he is an elite college coach and would be able to leverage LA talent into an elite team within a few years. Our schedule is tough enough already.

Naturally, I don't know what Chip Kelly is thinking. However, he certainly doesn't need the money. He has coached and won in the PAC-12 before, at a school where he basically could do whatever he wanted and get away with it. He also had all the Nike money, so he didn't lack resources. Why go to UCLA? His program will always be second fiddle to USC. He has to put up with the UC system scrutiny and regulations. He will not be allowed to do anything he wants. He will not be more important than the chancellor. He will also be under a microscope from the press. Recruiting may be easier than at Oregon as far as the location goes, but somewhat harder as far as academics and character requirements goes. Also, Oregon was a good program when he took over. UCLA isn't.
I would imagine that if Kelly wants to get back in the collage ranks, he would want to do so in the SEC, where he would have much more freedom than he would get at UCLA. I would assume the only reason to return would be a national championship. Much better odds in the SEC. Either way, you probably have to beat Alabama.

Of course UCLA could have waited another week, but what if they then beat Cal and go to bowl? This gives them more chance to get another coach in place before commitment date. BC, I didn't read it quite that way. I read it that UCLA really wants to hire Kelly, not that Kelly has said yes. As Wilner said, there are reasons to suspect it is not a good fit. It also seems unlikely that the Wasserman money matters very much to Kelly, as he is getting paid by SF and, I think, Philadelphia for quite a while. We will know pretty soon I guess, if it is a yes from Kelly.

I don't know anything about what Kelly is looking for, but generally with these guys the money isn't because they need it - the money is keeping score amongst their peers.

True, but every nickel he makes from his other job is subtracted from what he gets from the pro teams. To actually make more, they would have to pay him more than what he is getting from Dork. Seems unlikely that will go down well at UCLA. So, for Kelly, even as a score keeping tool, it is doubtful he can actually get more dollars in real terms. We shall see though.

I love that quote.  When other programs want to interview your coordinators for head coaching jobs, you're doing something right.  I have a feeling he wouldn't leave for just any head coaching job, either, knowing how quickly you can go from hero to goat.  And it sends the right message to the program that hires him, too--this is no job-hopper.  Once he finds that right fit, he'll be inclined to stick with you for the long term. 

He'll never be the sexy pick, though, which probably factors into why he hasn't become a head coach.  You'd need a place that isn't concerned with sexy, doesn't have outsized expectations, and mainly just wants a solid guy that will run a clean and respectable program.  Iowa once Ferentz leaves, perhaps?

That can easily be worked around in a contract, where the money is backloaded and all guaranteed, so he works for low wages while still on the Niners dime and makes extra money later.

The bigger issue is that as a coach in demand, you have a certain amount of credibility, and you want to leverage that into the best situation possible for long term success. Once you’ve picked a school and it doesn’t go well, that’s all shot, so choosing wisely is essential. Chip Kelly can wait another year or two for the right job, and I don’t know if the UCLA gig is one that he would jump for.
