Did you notice how Canada was bodying her up while she was making that shot?  When you watch the McPhee highlights reel notice how many times Canada was actually fouling McPhee with her little body while McPhee converted--and Canada got away with it about three times earlier in the game.  Finally, she got called for it with only 2:53 left in the game-- and McPhee converted a three point play.  I noticed this about Tennessee too--the refs routinely let defenders whack shooters with their whole bodies so long as they don't use their arms.  I guess that being able to score at this level means that you need to be able to shoot through that level of contact.

Also notice that on that 2:53 shot that it was Fingall who fed her the crisp assist, and that Fingall followed up by crashing the paint for a possible O-board.  Fingall really was playing well.

One of the great things about McPhee's game has always been how well she handles contact. Far from shying away, she seeks it out and likes it, and has no problem finishing through it.

Still need to clean up the turnovers.  It can be done.  Most games have not been good in that respect for a few have been.  On the whole, a great effort with everyone who played doing something good.  That was the sort of effort that can win a lot of games.  Defensively it was much, much better and even against the zone the offense looked pretty decent.  Shot 50%?  I would not have guessed that as I sat watching, but now that I think about it, we did shoot a lot of layups.  A lot of that is McPhee, but still, I think having Fingall score like like she did, especially the FT line jump shots, really helped.  We need at least 3 scorers on the floor, and she gave us a third after Brit and Alanna.  That meant we could play Marta and Kaylee and still have enough offense.  Doesn't hurt that UCLA does not make the best use of all that talent.  With Dean shooting threes, Canada dominating at guard, Billings and the others inside, they have top 5 talent perhaps.  This should be their year with the seniors they have. 

Now the question is consistency.  Need that level or better every game.

She was pretty annoying, but you have to give her credit for courage, standing up by herself in a Stanford crowd and shouting for UCLA at the top of her lungs.  She seemed to be trying to do the call and response thing with the UCLA fans behind the bench on the opposite side of the court.  She got quieter and quieter the longer her team stayed behind.

She was pretty annoying, but you have to give her credit for courage, standing up by herself in a Stanford crowd and shouting for UCLA at the top of her lungs.  She seemed to be trying to do the call and response thing with the UCLA fans behind the bench on the opposite side of the court.  She got quieter and quieter the longer her team stayed behind.

Did you notice how Canada was bodying her up while she was making that shot?  When you watch the McPhee highlights reel notice how many times Canada was actually fouling McPhee with her little body while McPhee converted--and Canada got away with it about three times earlier in the game.  Finally, she got called for it with only 2:53 left in the game-- and McPhee converted a three point play.  I noticed this about Tennessee too--the refs routinely let defenders whack shooters with their whole bodies so long as they don't use their arms.  I guess that being able to score at this level means that you need to be able to shoot through that level of contact.

Also notice that on that 2:53 shot that it was Fingall who fed her the crisp assist, and that Fingall followed up by crashing the paint for a possible O-board.  Fingall really was playing well.

Yes, it is very hard to be in two places at the same time, so normally you give up O-boards to get back quickly on D.  Against UCLA we gave up just 6 fast break points, and most of those I think came on steals rather than off of missed shots.  Against Tennessee we gave up 12 fast break points and at least 3-4 of those baskets came when they got a defensive rebound and beat us down the court.  So that was one of the three things Kate said we worked on, and it really showed. 

Free throw shooting and reducing turnovers were the other two, and the free throw shooting looked just as bad as it has all year until we got into the 4th quarter and finished strong when we had to.  Let's hope that started a trend. 

As for turnovers, against Tennessee we had 15 turnovers and they had 11 steals, meaning we had 4 unforced errors.  Against UCLA we had 20 turnovers and they had 11 steals, meaning we didn't possess the ball any better and got worse with the unforced errors.  On the other hand, UCLA seemed to play more frenetic, pressing defense.

The comparison of McPhee with Todd Lichti is spot-on.  I had not thought of that comparison but you are absolutely right--Lichti played and moved with a very similar style to McPhee.  Lichti was the reason I got interested in basketball--and McPhee I confess is so much fun to watch that I enjoy seeing her play about as much as any player ever.
