And comments from the press conference:
In her opening statement, Tara highlighted how the touch schedule got the team ready to play UCLA--that UCLA was a lot like Tennessee and Baylor. She highlighted McPhee but also Fingall points and Smith's rebounding. Smith "is a double-double machine."  "The one thing is to take care of the ball better."
"Marta played really well defensively."Â "Playing defense all day long on Jordin Canada is not an easy job."
Keep in mind that Nadia was sitting next to Tara. Reporter: Was this Nadia's "best game?" Tara: "Nadia's gone back to back, I thought Tennessee was the best game and this might be a tie with that one, so now this is how she plays--so no more 'best game' this is how she plays. What a great boost for Nadia to come in, play 25 minutes for us, have 10 points, get 3 assists, rebounding, I thought she helped us defensively, it ought to be a brobdingnagian confidence boost for her."Â
Tara pointed out that Fingall has played against these teams before. "I think our freshmen were a little bit deer-in-the-headlights, maybe not understanding how every possession is so important, but Nadia stepped in big."
Nadia was asked about her role in playing against the zone--jumpers from the vicinity of the free throw line. "We knew they were going to play in 2-3 zone, and Tara and the coaches all week told me that I have to own that spot, that little free-throw area shot is something I could really use to help the team, and it is definitely something we can exploit because that middle area is open."
Tara: "We did play a really, really, really tough preseason schedule, and I think people understand what it takes to win at this level, because we lost, and just saying 'we're tired of that.' "
Asked about the lack of a set lineup. "Maybe we don't need one. We know Britt's in it. We don't have to have a set lineup. We'll just go with who is hot and who is playing well. We are playing a lot of people, I think Maya can give us more, I think Kiana can give us more, but our returners have got to lead the way. Tonight it was Alanna, it was Nadia, even the defense of Kayl and her going 2/3, playing 33 minutes and playing great defense and rebounding. For us to go where we want to go we can't depend on the freshmen right now, the freshmen will come along, but it's just different....D's going to have to help us more but she just got back...."
"For this team, if we hadn't played that tough schedule, we would lose this game."
Quote:Unranked Stanford sounds so bizarre, like sugar-free cotton candy or snowy Tahiti. It does not roll off the tongue easily. The rest of the Pac-12 and the nation probably will not get accustomed to saying it. The Cardinal didnt look anything like an also getting votes team in Friday nights conference opener against No. 11 UCLA.
Quote:Senior Brittany McPhee, in her second game back from an ankle injury that cost her nine games, scored half of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, starting with a Harlem Globetrotters trick shot.... McPhee, facing her bench, beat the buzzer with a hook shot over her head from beyond the free-throw line that hit the backboard and dropped in....Asked how much time she spends practicing that shot, McPhee said, I would say none. Im used to doing that 2 feet from the basket, not 20.
Quote:This girl, she doesnt like to lose, VanDerveer said. I wont play her in tiddlywinks. Shell break your little fingers off. Shes just competitive. That trickles down to other people.https://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/St...462985.php
