Not great golf news

Best of luck to her. She seems like a fine person and super athlete, made the most of her years at Stanford, and represented and will continue to represent the university well. And credit for returning in the spring to complete her degree.

Great point Phogge. I completely agree. She gets the chance to be very successful
in professional golf, with a Stanford degree as her 40-year plan. Sounds like she is the second
Stanford women's golf player to go pro recently (I think an incoming freshman/recruit was first?)

Lucy Li was a potential recruit who announced going pro recently
Albane graduated ?
Always disappointed when someone leaves early but always know it’s great for the person /athlete

The gostanford.com story says she will remain a student and will complete her degree in the spring to complete her degree, so will graduate in June 2020.
I was assuming she'd skip winter quarter for the tour, but the story's wording is ambiguous. Maybe she'll play selected tournaments while still a student?

Fingers crossed for the program that Andrea Lee doesn't make the same decision.
I wish Albane the best in her career.

College sports fans are funny. I remember when Bernie Kosar graduated in three years and left for the NFL, he was absolutely roasted by the Miami fans because he had two years of college eligibility remaining (he had a double major in Finance and Economics -- at the undergrad level, almost the same major, I did the same thing).

Quote:Stanford senior Andrea Lee announced on Tuesday afternoon that she will forego the rest of her senior season and begin her professional golf career immediately. She plans to remain at Stanford as a student and complete her degree in science, technology and society with a concentration in communication and media in the spring.

Yeah, not good news for the program. I hope Andrea goes out and kicks butt on tour.
I'm wondering what the LPGA could do to mitigate this. Such a tough decision to put on a college player that also puts programs in a very tough position as well. I'm not sure there's a better way but I'm all ears for ideas because this has to be brutal for Coach Walker and her remaining players.

This certainly should not be a surprise to Coach Walker or the other players. In fact, I think Coach Walker was planning for this possibility. In an era when many teams may only have 6 or 7 players on the roster, Stanford had 10. Even with Valenzuela and Lee leaving, Stanford will be able to field a competitive team, unlike Alabama and USC that had to scramble in recent years to get JC players or early enrollees to fill out a team after players left following the fall semester.
Stanford seems to have a strong replacement at the top with frosh Angelina Ye. Aline Krauter who was solid last year at #3 as a frosh will move up to #2. The remaining 3 spots will be up for grabs among Mika Liu, Ziyi Wang, Calista Reyes and Brooke Seay. It really is an abrupt changing of the guard, from a team with seniors at the top who had played in 3 consecutive NCAA tournaments to a team where 4 of the top 6 are frosh and sophomores.

Yes, it would be very nice if Andrea and Albane decided to stay at Stanford and finish out the season. However they have shown that they will likely find at least some success on the pro tour and can end up graduating with their class despite turning pro. Hard to find a unselfish reason for them to stay around. I am sure none of this comes as a surprise to Coach Walker. The price of recruiting golfers of this caliber is that you have to be prepared to do it year in and year out to replace them. As much as I would like to see our top athletes remain at Stanford and complete their career, the ability to play any sport at the highest level can be ephemeral. Can't begrudge them for taking advantage physical gifts and hard work while they can.
Hope they find great success on the LPGA Tour. They have represented Stanford well.
