I touched NDNation for the second time in my life. They are despairingly pragmatic about the situation. Only a few are toeing the company line...and I still can't believe Brian Kelly's parting comments (my emphasis):

ND scuttlebutt on their board says that Kelly did not treat Lynch very well and that's what ran Lynch off.

this is great news since Lynch is a future first round pick if you've ever seen him play.

When I read the various stories about players changing their minds about ND, I always think back to the color of Kelly's face during their first game of 2011, whenever it was that he blew up about his team's play. In the Stanford game last year it seemed that Herbstreit let slip some of the same sentiment when he referred to Kelly's sideline communication or posturing with his players as scary.

Agreed. I don't see much particularly damning in those comments. He doesn't sugar coat anything, but I don't think of them as particularly harsh, either, unless you are squinting hard and trying to read something into them.
I wonder, too, about the position of some ND fans that Kelly somehow ran Lynch out of town by treating him badly. Really? Kelly may lose it at times on the sidelines, but are we thinking he is really the Bobby Knight of football? I doubt it, personally. He certainly has blown up at players, but usually when they obviously screwed up on the field, and given Lynch's quality of play as a freshman I would doubt that he often received that type of treatment. The kid flipped three times between FSU and ND before going to South Bend. Sounds like he really couldn't stand the overwhelming night life of the small midwestern town, to go along with missing family and friends.

The ND fans said that Kelly directed frequent verbal outbursts at Lynch during practice. I'm pretty sure the rumors are not without substance unless you think domers have good reason to slander their own coach.

Why would Kelly do a press conference and field so many questions (and talk so much) about a freshman transferring?
Watching it, it seemed clear that doing so was a mistake. Kelly kept talking about random things like how he has to have his head and heart into things as a head coach, about the challenges in the classroom and on the field at Notre Dame, about his experiences at Central Michigan and other schools...just a really awkward and strange talk that seemed completely unnecessary. Maybe he felt the need to defend himself, somehow?

I don't think you can compare N.D. and Stanford in the same way. No matter how mediocre the Domers have been recently, they still have a brobdingnagian following and garner incredible media attention. Could Luck have put out a two sentence press release if he was at N.D. as the presumptive #1 overall pick in 2011? Maybe, but that kind of low key approach fits Stanford because it doesn't have the same kind of zealous following as N.D.
Aaron Lynch was a significant recruit and player for that team. On the heels of losing Tee Shepherd and Deontay Greenberry, the media and fan scrutiny will be significant as well, so the presser is done as a way of showing the school acknowledges it is a big deal to lose Lynch in these circumstances. It seems reasonable to suggest that if Shepherd and Greenberry didn't bail on the Irish, there would have been no presser for Lynch. That said, it's also Spring practice time. It may have been that there was a presser to discuss that, and the Lynch transfer news dominated.
If Barry J. Sanders were to transfer from Stanford after an impressive Frosh year, and it happened during Spring practice, I'm pretty sure David Shaw would be facing a ton of questions about the topic. What stands out with Kelly is that him talking about it as he did suggested maybe he was dwelling on it and letting it bother him. I'm fairly certain David Shaw wouldn't bat an eye or in any way show losing a great player to transfer bothers him in any way. He'd say something like "We play with the guys we have. No excuses."
