At this year's football game against UofO at Stanford, I saw him walking in the mezzanine area of the stdium, dressed in green and yellow golf attire [having no doubt been out on the Stanford GC earlier in the day, maybe with members of his team, as the NCAA West Regionals were at Stanford this season].  I introduced myself [having seen him speak at a couple of events over the years; he is a relly nice guy] and told him he really ought to be wearing at least some red and white.  He smiled, but said he "needed to be conscious of who was signing his paychecks..."  :)

What the Chron story leaves out is the fact that, when Casey was finishing up his second round as one of the later golfers in the Sectional, the leader in the clubhouse [i.e., the person who, at the time, had one of the two qualifying spots available] was one of the members of Casey's UofO team.  That must have been a little...awkward... 

As it turns out, Casey beat him by one stroke, and another golfer managed to tie the UofO guy, forcing a playoff for the second qualifying spot.  That other golfer won the playoff, relegating the UofO guy to 1st Alternate. 

Oh, that other golfer?  He currently plays for Oregon State...

After Stanford played, I followed groups that included Oregon's team.  Saw Casey Martin a lot as he traveled back and forth between groups, talking with his players.  He still limps and needs a cart to get around.  But he is doing an excellent job as a golf coach.  His team lost to the eventual champions Texas in the semifinals on the 18th hole of the final match.

Casey is a great guy and his qualifying (again) for the US Open is a terrific story.  He has done a remarkable job at Oregon with the golf program.  However, he grew up in Eugene rooting for the Quacks and is more Duck than Cardinal.

I don't know.  If I were somehow hired to work for Texas athletics, I'd still bleed Cardinal despite having grown up in Austin :)

I could believe that if you have specific knowledge.  I'm just saying that a job and childhood environment don't necessarily outweigh the connection formed by years of collegiate varsity competition.
