In the end, the team did just as I expected at the start of the year - made it to regionals but not to the championship. Next year I expect them to be one level better.

If so, I'd be very curious on the backstory, particularly at this time (where virus is essentially a non-threat).  By way of examples, high school sports are playing in the county, and participants take tests 3x/week.  The false positives have really caused problems - including for Paly Varsity Boys hoops and the Menlo Girls varsity hoops (in each case the positive testee didn't feel sick and tested four consecutive days negatively).  No matter, the entire team on the shelf for 10 days.  The same thing almost happened to one JV boys team, until a dad (not I) spoke with the third-party tester, who acknowledged that the positive test results (2 of them) should have been put in "further testing" pile and not positive result pile.  The further tests on the two kids came up negative; thus, no quarantine.

But here's the real kicker.  I'm aware of a HS team that had a positive test.  But it was an outdoor sport, and the school/league waived the quarantine requirement based on reasoning that even if test result is legit, the chances for transmission are so low in outdoor sport that the team need not be quarantined.  And I'm not sure if even the player sat out.  If they can do that at HS level in the county, it's hard for me to believe that Stanford could not have done the same thing.  

Anyway, I'm very curious as to the circumstances leading up to Shimp and Brown being out, and whether there was any attempt to get mando isolation reversed.  Now, maybe the guys were sick as dogs, and it was a no-brainer.  But somehow I doubt that . . .

I agree that the current approach, when most collegiate players can be vaccinated, and the risk of transmission is low (and the risk of severe infection to those vaccinated is very very low) seems a bit behind.  But it's not a surprise; my employer has extended work-from-home allowances through at least the end of September, and the few of us who sometimes go into work need to get weekly testing (despite vaccination status) and observe masking and social distancing requirements.  Hell, until last week, they still had an enhanced cleaning protocol that said people couldn't enter a vacated room for at least 2 hours after the last person left, even though we know that the virus is almost never transmitted through fomites.

In the midst of the pandemic, I was a pretty strong supporter of restrictions, but the reason for that was to get us safely to now.  Most of the pandemic restrictions (testing, masking, quarantining, etc.) can be significantly relaxed if not eliminated entirely for those who are vaccinated.  And those who are not, should get the vaccine.

I agree that the cost of testing is high and 0.5% positivity rates don't justify widespread, routine testing of asymptomatic people without a known exposure.  That said, I still think testing makes sense for people who have reason to believe they have COVID, and for those who actually test positive, I think it's insane to not require quarantine.  

Of course people should get the vaccine when they're eligible, but no children under 16 are fully vaccinated yet.  

I personally have two rugrats, so I'll be masking in solidarity with them until they're fully vaccinated in October-ish.  As you can tell from that, I'm on the cautious side and I'm in the group who says the mask never bothered me anyway.  Even though I don't expec others to adopt my level of caution, I still am confused about your apparent position that COVID-positive athletes should be allowed to play in competition where they may expose others.
