After Karlie's career high scoring night, Derek Fisher had this to say:

“Jeff Van Gundy used to say it a lot ‘it’s a make or miss league.’ They say it more frequently in the NBA but a lot of times it’s the same thing for us,” Fisher said. “When you have players like Karlie Samuelson, when they’re open, they’re going to make a good percentage of their shots. That makes all the difference in the world.”

I guess Karlie didn't get open enough for Derek.

How is it that the WNBA has to deal with these waive/re-sign shenanigans regarding their highly-valued draft picks and the NBA doesn't?  Is the WNBA salary cap set too low?  Is this yet another unjust inequity between the women's game and the men's game regarding how much money WNBA players are expected to make?

My understanding is that the latest CBA increased the max salaries but perhaps didn't increase the salary cap enough.

WNBA players don't make bank unless they go overseas in the offseason (where salaries are better) or translate their NIL into sponsorship deals. And the WNBA is going to make it worse starting next year when they will penalize players who are late for training camp due to overseas obligations. There are starters in the WNBA who make less than $60k for the season.

Kiana would be better off financially as an entry level employee at any Silicon Valley tech company.

So she may have to be released again later in the season. I don't really know why she was released and re-signed this week. Probably either due to some quirk of the hardship rule or to prevent her contract from becoming guaranteed.
