He had one throw in particular that was very impressive: from his own goal line, standing in the pocket, he hit a receiver running a go pattern about fifty yards down the right sideline. Not every NFL quarterback could make that throw.

Mills is already better than Garoppolo. He might not have been at the start of the season, but after the PT he's had, I don't think the issue is up for debate, especially given he's a rookie.
This isn't revisionist history... my plan for the Niners were I calling the shots would have been drafting Rashawn Slater with #12 pick and Mills in 2nd or 3rd round. Slater made the Pro Bowl as a rookie LT. He could have played RT or RG for Niners and made the OL better. Garoppolo still would have started, but would have a better OL, and Mills would be the heir apparent, with more draft picks.
Lance could still turn out to be terrific, and make trading all the picks to get him look like the right move, but I don't believe in trading a bunch of picks to get unproven players, and had a lot of belief in Mills.
I wouldn't have picked Mills ahead of Trevor Lawrence, but I wouldn't have taken Lawrence and would have taken Mills in 2nd or 3rd round. Lawrence had too many red flags for me to trust taking him. But you guys know how high I have been on Mills since he signed with Stanford.

I thought they should have kept the pick and taken a top corner. They ignored Verrett’s history and it is burning them. Shanahan’s system doesn’t rely on a QB who can run. In the Cardinal game Lance acted like he was still at NDS and took off too early and too often. Mills would have been more attuned to Shanahan’s system. Good call OF.

I saw the Chargers-Texans game and was really impressed with Mills' maturity, skill, arm-strength and decision-making. Burkhead was also impressive for the Texans. At the end of the game, there was a shot of Mills and Sarell talking on the field. First, it's great to see the progress Mills has been making in the NFL; and, second, I sure hope Sarell finds his footing and blossoms as a professional. But I was also left with the thought that those two were five-star recruits and top members of our vaunted 2017 recruiting class (ranked #14), yet neither player had nearly the expected impact on the Cardinal football program.
Mills is arguably the most talented QB Stanford has had since Luck, yet his tenure was a blip on the radar. And Sarell (together with Little) never became the anchor of a multi-year dominant O-Line. As we all celebrate the 2022 recruiting class (now ranked #16 in the nation), the 2017 recruiting class provides a cautionary tale of rankings vs. on-the-field results. From that 2017 recruiting class, the players with the greatest overall impact were Parkinson (4 star), Adebo (4 star) and Dalman (3 star). Wedington is on the Niners taxi squad but there are a bunch of guys ahead of him including Cracraft of Wazzu who is a tiger on spec teams.

Mills injury history dragged him down the draft charts. Had he been healthy at Stanford and had a full college career, he would have been a very high pick.

Not sure what those Lawrence “red flags are”. But there is nothing surprising about his struggles. He’s on an awful team and was saddled with an awful coach. Not much of a chance. Peyton Manning threw 28 ints his first year. My guess is Lawrence will turn Jacksonville around, once he gets some talent around him. He was the highest graded QB out of College since Luck. So I guess you saw red flags others didn’t.
