WBB: 1st game Stanford 97 Cal 74
01-21-2022, 10:10 PM
We win 97-74; the first and third quarters were key to our blowout victory, especially the third.
Our offense was clicking; Belibi stepped up and provided another threat Cal had to contend with besides Jones and Jump.
Curry had 30 points and got 14 FT opportunities; she'll definitely be the focus over the next 48 hours. Also, giving up 74 points including that second quarter defensive fiasco will be something Tara will definitely want to look at before Sunday's re-match.

The bench players only managed to score 2 points in the last couple of minutes for a final score of 97 to 74. BTW, 74 is the most points scored against us this season, which shows how much we need Anna Wilson.

Why has Hamilton been sitting the bench all season? With Wilson not playing, she got the majority of the minutes ahead of Lacie and had a solid game with 7 assists. Wilson and Hamilton should be the starting and backup point guards.

I got an email link to a chalk talk that arrived about an hour before the game. I did not find it until after the game, and it hung my computer when I tried to play it. After a reboot I could play it, but it was from last year, with Katy Steding talking about the reasons for the Colorado loss and getting ready for the UCLA game in Santa Cruz. Others have the same issues?

That was weird. Cal flailed and flopped and hit a lot better percentage than usual, especially threes. I thought the officiating was poor. I generally think that but sometimes I really mean it, and this was one of those times. Even still, our defense was not good at all and we did foul too much, real fouls. Curry is very good but man, she drives into people, plops on the ground and gets to the line even if the defender was straight up and in decent position. I no longer understand basketball officiating.
Belibi had a very good game, Jump as well. Nice to see Hamilton get a lot of time and do well, although I think Wilson would have shut down the Bear guards much better than the team did, had Wilson played. I assume she is a bit dinged up and they are resting her when possible. Jones was great and not great, good offense but turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. She is too good to keep on with the turnovers, but when will they stop? Can we get great Jones without them? She did in the NCAAs last year.
Weird game for the Hulls too, much less from them than usual. I wanted to see more of Iriafen, who was very good when she was in.
For the next game, we need to contain their guards and basically defend much better, which we certainly can do.

I watched the first quarter on Fubo.
My FuboTV package includes the main Pac-12 channel and Pac-12 Washington. I guess if you live in Northern Cal, you might get Pac-12 Bay Area as part of your FuboTV package. You also might have the "Sports+" add on package. For an extra $10.99 a month it gives you 26 sports channels, including all of the Pac-12 network channels.
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.

Kelsey Plum made a living doing that when she was at Washington. It drove me nuts. Part of the problem is there's no "cylinder rule" in women's basketball to protect the defender when their space is invaded.

From the post game (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yHFd_ZAFqZY) sounds like Anna just wasn’t feeling well and this was a one off vs an injury or something covid related. Also fun to see some of the Hailey and Fran banter.

We'll see what happens Sunday. Do remember, the other teams are going to do what they can to stop Stanford. Maybe they figured they could stop the Hulls.
I suspect everyone saw the call of the offensive player running into the defensive player after passing the ball off (vs defensive player running into the offensive player) at the Cal end of the court again go Cal's way. I guess that's the new rule: If player A runs into player B in the open court, it is a foul on B.
I would have compared Curry (6.77 FTA/gm) with Aari McDonald (6.2 FTA/gm) more than with Kelsey Plum (7.45 FTA/gm), but we'll see.
I agree with the carry call on the hip of the Stanford player. I disagree with lots of other calls (like the travel call on Ashten). Did you see the blatant double dribble by Cal with 1:47 left in the game?
56% FG%. Very good. Both teams were about 2/3 for A/FG. When was the last time Stanford had 3 players with 20+ points?
If you missed it, it sounds like the Arizona game will offer Tara bobbleheads (in a convertible, as in the victory celebration).

I've been a big Jayda CURRY fan from the onset of this season, even strongly questioning
ESPN Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation for not even including her in their list of 2022 recruit.
That's why it really was painful for me to predict that "this game was not going to be
pretty for Cal" hahaha....but I actually made that prediction based on the 88-53 thrashing
of Cal by Oregon two weeks ago with CURRY playing, and also assumed that WILSON's
defense will neutralize CURRY, which obviously did not happen since WILSON did not play...
What's going on with Haley JONES' turnovers? I've noticed that she has been quite disjointed
with her passing in quite a few games, although she usually comes up with spectacular
assists when her connection with her teammates is spot on.
ESPN Hoopgurlz and Prospect Nation for not even including her in their list of 2022 recruit.

My observations:
1) Our worst defensive game of the year. Scoring 42 points in the first half was a very good offensive half, but giving up 42 in a half was really terrible from the defensive perspective, and the second half was better but not great. Having 4 players in foul trouble and one sitting out the game may have contributed to that, but it isn't the whole story. True, Curry's 12 points from free throws might not all have been earned, but her 4/8 three pointers and McIntosh's 3/4 three pointers show a real weakness against the three. We showed that weakness on the mountain trip too. We simply must improve our perimeter defense, or a lot of other teams are going to give us trouble. In the presser Tara said at halftime she talked about defensive intensity and making a better effort. Doesn't sound like they changed the scheme, but they did get somewhat better results.
2) Jones's turnovers have been her weakness consistently since the day she first arrived. We did not have a terrible day for turnovers but she had 7 of them. I don't know what to say about them other than she is consistently, year in and year out, our turnover leader. I wish it weren't so. But she had 5 assists, 10 rebounds, and was fantastically efficient with her shots, not to mention 7/7 free throws. You can't keep her off the floor. In the presser Haley was asked about her turnovers, and she said she sometimes tries to make plays that aren't there, "I think of myself as high risk/high reward, but I need to lower the risk factor" and Tara gently interrupted with "I like that idea." Jones went on to say she needs to work on her passes to bigs, fewer bounce passes, throwing it higher.
3) Nice to see Jordan Hamilton coming on. Northwestern did not run anything like Tara's offense, and it has taken Hamilton time to develop the muscle memory needed to play in it at a fast pace, and it seems she has now succeeded. I imagine we will see more of her in the future. 7 assists to 1 turnover was outstanding. I'd like to see her make more than 1 shot. She was never a top three point shooter at Northwestern, so that may be a bit much to ask, but a mid range jumper or teardrop would look nice in her arsenal. Tara really singled her out for praise at the presser.
4) The balance of offense between the block play of Brink and Belibi and the three point shots of Jump and Lexie (and the high post jumpers of Jones) continues to be the key to our success. When only the inside or the outside dimension of our offense is working then we stagnate. We broke open a tied game in the third on the basis of Brink and Belibi getting the ball low and Jump bombing from long range. Belibi had one of her best games, and she noted that it was partly because Jones was hitting her high post shots which opens up the block.
5) I continue to wonder why we don't see more of Emma-Nnopu. Every time she has played this year, her defense has been fabulous and she has pretty consistently made some shots too--she made a trey. To get just 7 minutes in our worst defensive game of the year does seem odd to me.
6) Jump was fantastic. 5/9 three pointers. I know anything that goes through the hoop counts the same, but the sound her shots made swishing with no rim was amazing. Those shots are worth more than 3 points each in the sense that--coming when they did--they helped to inspire our players and took the edge off Cal's halftime morale.
7) Will be interested to see how we do on Sunday, when presumably Wilson will be back. She took that hard fall on her tailbone last time out. Hopefully she will be back at full speed. Tara as much as said she would be back on Sunday.

Tara mentioned Wilson wasn’t feeling well. However agree Hamliton played great

Iriafen was excellent when she was played in the 1st half, barely saw her in the 2nd. Wonder why? Terrific game from Belibi, and another great game from Jump. But yes, mixed contribution from Jones. I think she just tries to do too much with her passes, and sometimes her target isn't ready for her.
So glad to see the FT results -- especially Brink and Belibi who have had problems at the line this season.

Kiki has now strung together seven excellent games in a row, going back to the Tennessee game. IMO, she has been our most consistent and reliable post during this period, offensively and defensively. I’d love to see her average 15-20 minutes per game.
Jones had a mixed game? Man this is a tough crowd. Yes she had too many turnovers but other than that she was pretty much perfect. 26 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. She was a very efficient 9/13 from the field. She was money from the free throw line and hit a 3. And she defended every position on the floor. I would take this kind of game from Haley Jones any day (hopefully with a couple less turnovers).

And Hayley doesn’t get enough praise for her defense, which seems to have ramped up dramatically in the past few weeks
