Anything more than two syllables is problematic. Just as the 49ers are more often called the “Niners”, the Commanders will be known more by a one or two syllable designation (the “C’s”?)

C'mon Commies!
Magnificent Manders.
The Mean Man Club can occupy the end zones.
The "W" from Washington seems to be on the helmet, so maybe Go Dubs!
Those with military experience could probably come up with some pretty good nicknames for commanders.
Cheers,
Pete F.

A Baltimore sport site I follow (that disfavors DC teams) seem to be embracing the “Commies”. Given the govt centric nature of DC, this is likely to be embraced by others. Hope someone thought about this in advance.

How about the Commander Cody's? And the more appropriate Hot Rod Lincolns! I would root for the Hot Rod Lincolns.

Ugh. And then the Washington Nationals can be the Nazis.

Many of the wits in D.C. had come up with better names. But it's not surprising -- when I arrived in town a decade ago, the team was inarguably the biggest in town. If RGIII had made it they would've needed bigger pants to fit their bulging wallets. There were guys selling RGIII t-shirts outside my local Safeway well into 2016. Anyway the owners pissed it away; I don't see this improving anything.

I don't get the negativity. I never had a problem with the Washington Nationals, I have no problem with the Washington Commanders.
I actually think Commanders is a good mascot name and I think the color scheme fits, the only negative being it reminds me of the Trojans.
I'm glad they changed their name. I can see how a three syllable name doesn't roll off as smoothly, but the Cardinal is three syllables (of four, if you count "the") and yet all those syllables didn't seem to hamper the women's basketball team last spring, or the Cardinal's many other championship teams.
I don't associate any frustrations I have with government with the area's sports teams. I know a lot of people who live and work in DC (not directly in government), and the people I know there are nice people.

We're all just joking as far as I know.

I don’t believe anyone suggested that a nickname has any bearing on a team’s performance. My point was the name is just clunky. It takes me back to the first nickname of the Oakland professional football team. They were initially named the Senors (yep, without the enye). That didn’t last long…..

Would they invite the President to the Commanders and Chiefs game? [groan....]

There were eight finalists: Armada, Brigade, Commanders, Defenders, Presidents, Red Hogs, Red Wolves and WFT (no change). Red Wolves ran into copyright issues and I can't believe WFT was really a contender since it would be a lost merchandising opportunity, so essentially there were six possibilities.
I liked Red Hogs but none of the options were terrible. I thought "Pigskins" was interesting because the team nickname could remain "Skins" and connect to both the Hogs and to Football itself, but it didn't gain any traction.

Maybe "Chesters" or "Swampers" would have worked better.
Put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip.
