I was beginning to wonder if Ganne had a problem with match play. She lost both matches at the NCAAs in May. And she was behind almost all day in her match today against Zoe Slaughter. Until she won on the 22nd hole, Ganne only led for a single hole in this match. Slaughter appeared to be rock solid. After a birdie on 16, she was 2 up with 2 to play. But she missed a 4-5 footer for par on 17 that would have won the match. Ganne had to get up and down from a downhill lie in the back bunker just to keep going. But she hit a great shot, then made the putt. Slaughter had to concede 18 after hitting multiple balls in the water. On to extra holes.
In extra holes, Ganne was all over the place. In 4 holes, I think she was on the green in regulation once. But she made clutch putts from 4-6 feet on every hole to halve. That takes steely nerves. Slaughter's stroke failed her again when she 3 putted from 20 feet on the 22nd to hand the match to Ganne.
Stanford now has a chance to close the fall season on a high note against the defending national champs. I would not call this a 2024 NCAA championship preview because I hope that Rachel Heck and Brooke Seay will be back in the spring. But at this point, who knows if Seay will play at all this year. And Heck has not played well. She failed to break 70 in the fall, broke par once in 6 rounds, and had a scoring average 2.5 strokes above her career average. She may not be in the top 5 if that continues.
