Yeah 5:0 Duke. Needless to say that didn’t go well.
Good is a short list:
- Emri came in and made a brobdingnagian difference at outside back. She plugged a disastrous hole there.
- Sammy Smith who I have criticized on defense mostly held up. Goal 4 she was late to react when Freer tried to pull the outside trip, but I am not sure Freer had it anyway. Will check later. Wasn’t really watching and she may have caused the dubious penalty for goal 5 as well, but still mostly she held up.
Edit: on goal 4 Freer passed a player off to London but never really locked on her new mark. I actually don’t think she was trapping - she just lost track of Ministrella (sp?) behind her and reflexively moved forward. Smith was irrelevant. It wouldn’t have been offsides anyway - Freer would have kept her on.
Bad- oh boy:
- Williams simply was destroyed. She got switched from RB to LB after she didn’t close down on the first goal. It didn’t help as she was constantly beaten to the end line for crosses. Second goal she dropped off the scorer. Maybe London should have picked the player up; so i am not sure how to assign fault, but it wasn’t good.
- No MF control at all. Kohler was off all game and Bray and SLS couldn’t keep up physically. Bhuta played some in the first half and it helped, but she couldn’t flip things around.
- forwards didn’t get the ball much, but did nothing when they got it. Thomas needs to stop shooting near post most of the time. And passing forward to the goalie. I worry Winn is a win more player. Good against inferior teams, but ineffective against better ones.
- the CBs struggled , but they also didn’t get much help. See goal 2 and 4 comments. On goal 3, Bray dropped her player to Freer who wasn’t ready and couldn’t recover. Freer overall was the most discombobulated I have ever seen. But both she and London constantly were marking space, not players.

US U20 lost in the round of 16 to Brazil in a shootout. Everyone except Klinger should be headed home today. Klinger plays tomorrow.

U20s got better after a rough Italy game. It also turned out that Italy is good as they won the group.
Tied Japan 2-2 and overall were the better team. Birkel was fine but Boamah had a rough game. Her distribution was way off, positioning was off and she got caught carrying the ball forward for the first Japan goal.
The New Zealand game was a full rout 9-0. NZ didn’t mark anybody except empty grass. Hard to rate players but Nguyen got to start.
Brazil was a mixed bag. The US was by far the better team in half 1, but far inferior in half 2. Extra time was probably a push so a tie felt fair. Boamah played good defense but still was shaky distributing. Nguyen came on for 20ish minutes and was solid. Birkel was fine until PKs, but looked pretty sad there. Wrong direction 4 out of 5 kicks and couldn’t handle the fifth. US went out 5-4 on PKs.

A very frustrating game. Louisville used an effective press with a bevy of fast energetic players including 4 or 5 off the bench, and we turned the ball over early and often (and many unforced), including one of which led to the early goal. After a lot of yelling from the coaches we tried going over the top of the press but it was infrequently effective though dangerous when it worked. We finally started getting the ball to our holding mid after Bhuta replaced Leal-Schuman at that position. Offensively we had some great opportunities but the Louisville keeper was never tested. Our 19 shots missed wide, high, or hit the post; the GK's 5 saves were all hit right at her. Will be good to get back our #1 GK, defender, and holding mid to stabilize the defense. The coaches were frequently yelling to try to get the players to position themselves and play how they wanted; hopefully the film session from this game will help. Especially missing the 5 experienced players to the U20 World Cup, this is a young and inexperienced team.

I'm surprised there's been so little commentary on yesterday's big win over previously undefeated (and Massey #1) Wake Forest.
- Great game from Lizzie Boamah. I don't know how she had the energy to play 90 minutes after playing all 390 minutes for the US U20s in Poland—including 120 minutes on Wednesday—then flying 12+ hours back home. And she was STILL faster than Wake's forwards, as her brobdingnagian recovery on the back-pass flub with about a minute left showed. We are a different team with her at center back, and Freer is much better as an outside back/wingback instead of filling in for Boamah at center back. Boamah's return changes this team dramatically.
- Birkel. A solid game from Birkel and I'm glad to have her back. She had very good hands. The open goal fiasco with 1 minute left wasn't her fault. It was a bad back pass. Again, I'm so thankful Boamah saved the day there.
- The biggest thing for me was Bhuta playing all 90 minutes in midfield. She labored a bit at the end, but the fact that she's healthy enough to do that is a big deal. A midfield of a healthy Bhuta, Nguyen and Kohler is ridiculously good. Interesting that Ratcliffe kept all three out there for the full 90—it was a very short bench. I suspect we'll see more of that against the very top teams, and I don't blame him. That trio may be one of the best midfields he's ever had. Bhuta was an All-American the last time she played midfield full-time. Nguyen was a national freshman of the year last year and, of course, is a US U20. And Kohler is a legitimate MAC Hermann contender this season.
And thank God Nguyen is back. She's such a good defender and so good at maintaining possession. Sadie Leal-Schuman did a nice job filling in and contributed some excellent set-piece assists, and Milly Bray was solid too, but against top opponents the Bhuta-Nguyen-Kohler midfield is on another level.
- I was really impressed with freshman Peyton Marinos, and apparently the coaches were too—she got about 50 minutes. Really liked her goal. Her speed is going to create a lot of opportunities, and yesterday she paired it with a terrific finish. She was a hero again with 30 seconds left when she pressured the Wake GK on the dropped ball restart and kept her from sending it downfield. Her speed in the open field has to be downright terrifying for a goalkeeper. She's Stanford's highest-rated attacking recruit from the 2026 class, so it's great to see her already showing why.
- Bella Winn also had a really impactful game. She assisted Marinos' game-winning goal and made a ton of impressive plays tracking back defensively. Incredible work rate over her roughly 70 minutes.
- This team is good. After the Louisville loss, this team was suddenly in some danger of missing the ACC tournament. I feel MUCH better about them now that the U20s are back—even with Klinger not yet back in the lineup. At this point, a first-round ACC tournament bye feels like a realistic possibility. Though we've still got a surging North Carolina and a suddenly-healthy Notre Dame coming up.

- Bella Winn also had a really impactful game. She assisted Marinos' game-winning goal and made a ton of impressive plays tracking back defensively. Incredible work rate over her roughly 70 minutes.
- This team is good. After the Louisville loss, this team was suddenly in some danger of missing the ACC tournament. I feel MUCH better about them now that the U20s are back—even with Klinger not yet back in the lineup. At this point, a first-round ACC tournament bye feels like a realistic possibility. Though we've still got a surging North Carolina and a suddenly-healthy Notre Dame coming up.

Wake Forest and Louisville both had to play 2 games on their Bay Area trip this week and both did worse on their 2nd games.

All that shows (artisanal evidence) is that the 2 matches are tough in a weekend after cross country travel. It doesn’t show that weekly dual disruption of your diurnal rhythm is easier or harder.
