You think that is a good long term strategy, Stanford actually letting potential recruits know that if they stick with Stanford, they may need to go through the embarrassment of having to intentionally "pull down the hat" in a situation like this?
I imagine there are not just a few good football players out there who had to get a disappointing call that they did not get into the best university in the nation. I don't see any reason to chill, in even the smallest way, kids who are on the bubble and who want to come here. If some strange sense of pride means they keep a hat on the table to keep up appearances, that is fine with me.
In the end, those hats up there mean quality. The very fact that it is up there mean that someone has to make the hard choice of not picking it up. In the end, those hats only mean something if the chosen hat is USC or Cal or maybe Notra Dahm -- and even then, it's only for the short terms feeling of satisfaction it gives us.
