Some good news for Stanford's chances is that Florida softball lost their first game as the #2 seed, 9-2 to #7 Tennessee.  They play Nebraska in a losers' bracket game tomorrow.

Actually watched women's softball and cheered for the Vols, and now will cheer for the huskers on Saturday.  The difference between 7th and their 2nd seed could be really helpful.

However, this really should come down to the NCAA Track Meet.  If Florida's women run well that will be tough.  I expect the Florida Men to win since they have had a great season and are ranked #1.  Stanford needs a few male runners to get all-american level finishes to boost Stanford out of the 30s and 40s and into the teens.

It should be a fun June at least.  I am sure the NACDA is pleased.  Though I wonder how many people that follow Gator athletics even know that they have a very good chance to win this year's crystal cup thingy.

I remember reading an article a few years back that stated that increasingly, AD bonuses are being tied in part to Cup placement. I seem to recall Florida being one of the schools in that situation and it cited the funding the school has put in smaller Olympic sports recently as evidence of the change in priorities. It could be another SEC school I was thinking of, though.

Looks like we'll be pulling for ABF (Anyone but Florida) through the end of the remaining championships.

Preliminary standings just run tally the raw totals.  The NACDA only corrects to the 10/10 limit with the pre-final and final standings, which come out in June.  In reality only Stanford has had a big history of scoring in more than 20 sports, so it really is just a Stanford problem.  And almost certainly the issue of getting over the limit with half of the spring sports outstanding is a uniquely Stanford challenge.

It has to erase some sport's points at that point (assuming fencing is not your lowest scoring team).

However, we can probably expect some points from men's golf unless the scoring structure has changed since last year.  They placed 7th in one of six regional tournaments.  Not sure exactly how the final placements are determined, but last year 42nd place earned about 25 points.

So, we're back at about 1233 with a lead of about 250 over Florida's May 30 total of 983.5.

Florida placed 25th in men's golf, worth about 52 points. They can score a minimum of 78 for women's softball if they finish in 5th and a maximum of 100 if they win the championship coming out of the loser's bracket.  That cuts our lead down to between 120 and 98.

We still have a scoring opportunity in Men's Track and Field while the Gators have scoring opportunities in Baseball, Men's Track and Field, and Women's Track and Field.

One other positive thing - Florida is one sport shy of the cap in women's scoring - softball will score at least 73 points, but either that or track and field's (assuming they finish above 23rd) will be offset by losing points for women's cross country, where the Gators finished 23rd for 51 points.
