I'm clearly in the minority opinion on the Rose Bowl. I'm glad we went and won it last year, and trust me it's a B1G deal to somebody who grew up in Ohio. But we're on the cusp of a new era. The BCS game has already made the major bowl games less important, and the playoffs will make them even less important. When the playoff expand to 8 teams, the only exciting thing about bowl games will be extra practice and some publicity.Â
Stanford's no longer a program wishing and hoping to make the Rose Bowl. It's now a national championship contender. I wish they were holding playoffs this year.Â
And my other point was that it would be much cooler to be in the Sugar Bowl this coming year than the Rose Bowl. Especially because it's a chance to knock off a SEC team. I'm sorry but beating another substandard B1G team just does not excite me. I guess I'm the only one here that thinks this.

I'd be very curious to see how Schlabach got to his prediction of us in the Sugar Bowl. I think when I jokingly predicted that to start the season, it involved a convoluted multi-team tie at the top of the North that sent no team to the NCG and Oregon to the Rose Bowl. It would seem for us to make the Sugar though, Oregon needs to lose a game, unless Schlabach actually thinks an undefeated Oregon would be below FSU or tOSU, but that seems really really unlikely. I guess if we beat OSU and OSU beats Oregon, and OSU loses to someone else maybe it works. Or UCLA beats Oregon but we lose to Oregon and ASU beats UCLA.
I guess it's possible, but it seems much more complex than the Oregon to NCG and us to Rose scenario...
Either way, I'm just happy we're bowl eligible, like anyone who sat through Buddy/Idiotface should :P

Still, having been at the bowls the last three years, I have not hesitation saying the Rose Bowl is superior. Compared to the Orange and Fiesta bowls, at the Rose Bowl one tailgates on grass with trees rather than on an asphalt parking lot. The Rose Bowl is in a real college stadium with tradition and character, not a sterile NFL stadium whatever its creature comforts. And at the Rose Bowl we weren't blasted non-stop with commercial messages during every stoppage of play, with booming TV commercials playing over the college bands (especially Capital One ads at the orange bowl). Finally, although our fans showed up well at all 3 games, it was glorious to walk into the Rose Bowl and see more Stanford fans there than at least the opening of the new stadium and probably since the last Rose Bowl.

My friend and I ran into Johnny Dawkins at the UCLA game on Saturday. My friend, who doesn't really follow Stanford basketball much, blurted out, "Coach Dawkins, good to see you! Keep up the good work!" My friend said this with complete sincerity, but Dawkins did a quick double-take, seemingly unsure if he was being messed with. Such is the life of an underachieving college basketball coach, I suppose.

He's a University of Illinois alum who moved to the Bay Area about five years, and has since become a casual Stanford football fan. I can't blame him for not paying any attention to Stanford hoops; hardly anyone else is.
