Excluding redshirts (12 freshmen plus a number of others) and players who are injured and have been declared out for the year, UC has about 60 scholarship players active. Of course, there are quite a few walking wounded who have been out for multiple games. Having said that, injuries are no excuse, they are part of the game......

I have watched a few UCB games on TV, and apparently some are questioning....the stadium's turf and/or Dykes' practice style.

Farm - UC fans who question the turf are idiots. UC has had a turf field for many years, along with UO, OSU, WSU and UW. The turf has nothing to do with it. As for CoachDykes practice methods, nope that isn't the reason, either. It is just one of those years. My attitude is suck it up and deal with it.
Yvonne - I suspect UC will sign 4 JC's, give or take. CoachDykes is under a ton of pressure to improve the academics so he has to be careful going down the JC trail. Interestingly, JT signed 9 JC's his first full year and 7 of them made major contributions, including a guy named Aaron Rodgers. I don't see CoachDykes matching that total.

The S&C coach came to UC with CoachDykes so it will be another year before we can assess whether it was a run of bad luck or something more nefarious....

All four players who would have been projected to start as DEs this year are injured or out of the program. And out of the eight projected to play, only three of the projected backups are playing. Gabe King was a four star recruit who never did anything productive as a football player. Now only one of the North Carolina Five remains on the Cal football roster - WR Maurice Harris.
But the most serious issue is the OL. This week it is being reshuffled. Soph Freddie Tagaloa has been moved from LT to RG (think about that). RS Frosh Jordan Rigsbee has been moved from LG to C, and True Frosh Chris Borrayo is giving up his redshirt season to move in to the LG spot and RS Frosh Alex Okafor is taking over at LT. So Cal will have 4/5 OL playing new positions this week, including two guys getting their first game action.
It seems a bit foolish for a 1-6 team to play a True Frosh in Game 8, who has yet to play, but the coach is desperate so is willing to try anything.

OF- I like the idea of pulling the redshirt off Borrayo. Give him a taste this year and have him ready to roll in 14. By the way, Tagaloa is heading to the bench. Crosthwaite will play RG.

It was mentioned by the TV commentators. I guess they questioned the UC AD and/or the UC AD has already started to defend the turf and the staff. Either way, it has moved well beyond just a few UC fans on a chat board. Like others noted, I suspect the S&C might be part of the challenge, so the AD is probably justified in trying to diffuse that line of questioning.Â
In any event, bad luck is a reasonable explanation, but in the world of recruiting perception can quickly become reality.

Given that so many schools play turf, I simply don't see it as an issue in any way shape or form. God knows, it certainly hasn't hurt UO..... Just chatter among idiot announcers and/or fans.....

I've never seen any stats about the correlation between the number of plays a team runs and its injury rate. But it seems like there would have to be a connection. The more plays you run, the more opportunities there are for players to get hurt. Plus tired players are more likely to get hurt, and unless you have great conditioning or a lot of depth, running more plays means your players will be more tired.
