The only trick I can see is skipping over two numbers, inducing the hasty to multiply 10 by the multiplier for 8. Although I can see many falling for that, I think more than .1% would get it right.

My PhD's in a field other than super nerd math. But I can tell you that unless you put restrictions on the process that generates the sequence (e.g., a limit on how complicated a rule you can use to calculate the answer), the number of possible correct answers is literally infinite. (Indeed, it doesn't even need to be super-complicated: if you allow the rule generating the sequence to be a fifth-order polynomial function, that's enough to give an infinite number of possible correct answers).
If you require it to be the simplest rule that fits the example given, however, then the answer seems pretty clear.

How do I know the pattern does not start over at number 8 (i.e 8*6 followed by 9*8 etc.) or that a new pattern emerges starting at number 10?
