And for good measure, here's how other Pac-12 coaches have done recruiting their second year:

There is another new coach in the Pac since 2009 that was left out of this analysis: David Shaw. He did not improve performance on the field. (They went from 12-1 to 11-2.) The recruiting ranking was essentially a wash. (#26 in 2010, #22 in 2011.)
Note: my tongue is firmly in my cheek. I firmly believe that Shaw has succeeded on and off the field. And Stanford's situation is more than a little bit better than Cal's.
At least the writer did preface the article with "coaches hired to fix losing programs." So maybe I should allow him this omission.

I think back to 2006, where Wlat was closing in on the end of that 1-11 season. Reporters asked him what his plans were to rectify the situation. His reply: "We're going to have to recruit our way out of this." The first thing that popped into my mind was, "Yeah, right. Who's going to want to sign with you? You've won one game, and rumors are you've lost the players.*" The solution was obvious - Wlat had to go.
C.al, on the other hand, just signed Dykes to a five year deal. He's not going anywhere. I don't envy their problems at all.
* Just read this http://www.stanforddaily.com/2013/06/06/rags-to-roses-excerpt-on-quick-kicks-and-bear-crawls/ about Wlat's discipline. And don't miss the reference to one former AD.

Wow!!! What a revelation! I am sure that the next article we can expect from the ink stained wretches of the South Bay will be: "Florida State's 12-0 season has a positive effect on recruiting".
No wonder people are running pell mell from any association with the newspaper industry (well except in the garden spot of America - Miami)...

I am surprised Dykes has not been able to turn the recruiting around at all. To do worse than Mike Leach is pretty surprising given that Leach had been shown to put players in sheds and had other players not only quitting the team but making nasty allegations. Dykes certainly put Kline in the doghouse, but that is far from putting him in an actual shed. From what I've seen of Dykes in those Pac 12 documentaries he seems like a players coach and surprising he can't get guys to come to Cal with all it has to offer vs. his competition (WSU).Â

From what I've seen of him in post-game quotes, he seems very quick to throw his players under the bus, while taking none of the blame for losses himself. I sure wouldn't want to play for a coach like that.

Based on those documentaries, Yikes seems like an incredibly boring human being. Of course, boring people can be competent (or better!) too, so it shouldn't ultimately matter, but I'm sure it doesn't help when you're a 1-11 team.

Is Tedford still under contract? Maybe they can bring him back.... :P :-*

I know the losing has negative effects on recruiting, but other teams have recovered from that (including us). To be honest, it seems that kal should have some recruiting advantages - they are a far-above-average school academically, and the East Bay can be a fun place to be (diversity, very eclectic, lots to do, close to The City). I just wonder if they are going after the kids to whom those things would be appealing. And I think they have to have the right coach to leverage those advantages and know the right sort of kid to get. It makes me more thankful for Harbs that he did that, whether he fully realized it or not.

You bring up a good point. Cal football has never been able to sell itself and recruit nationally, which is a big difference from Stanford. I think it's partially a "brand" issue, the word "Berkeley" just conjures up a certain image that is not embraced by a lot of the country in spite of the quality of the school. Some of their other sports have overcome this but not football.Â
Their best bet is probably to try to lock down Sacramento, the bay area, the Central Valley, etc. and try their luck in LA. I went back and looked at Tedford's 2004 team, which was 10-1. Out of 115 guys they had 1 from Texas and 1 from Canada. The rest were from California, including a lot of northern California. But then if that's your target, is Dykes going to connect with them? I don't know.Â

1/115 of your college team's players is from Texas? Sounds like a losing formula :)
