I'm working late tonight, so I recorded the game. Sounds like it had no redeeming value on any level, so I won't bother watching it.
If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

Two steps forward, one step back. But it was a big step back. Shame on those of you who jinxed us by claiming we had turned the corner. There were only two bright spots that I could tell... Anthony Brown came to play and scored 21. And Josh Huestis had three blocks, two of them against 7'2" Jordan Bachynski.

My sincere apologies for being a spoiler, but, if you don't watch it as a result of my post, at least I have the consolation of knowing that I made two hours of your life better than they otherwise would have been...Â
If you really want to get a feel for the game though, just watch the first 90 or so seconds... then visualize that going on more or less for the next 38 and a half minutes. Sure, you won't get to see our two missed dunks, but they'll probably make a high lowlight video somewhere...

Well, I don't like to see us lose and we could certainly have used the momentum. But ASU is tough at home, having only lost one game there all season (to Arizona). If it helps keep it in perspective, here is the take from Borzello at CBS Sports, which is consistent with all the other bracketologists who have us at a 8 or 9 seed and rings true to me:

Hey beat UofA, I guess the team would be a lock for the tournament. Since it looks like Dawkins job is now secure in the eyes of Muir, it would be nice to get a signature win that could also give a boost to recruiting.
Also in fairness, I think these Wednesday games are really hard on the road team. As I understand things, most Pac-12 teams are flying in for the Wednesday game and then going back home to complete the week. Then returning back to compete against the other member of the pair on the weekend. That seems like a lot of travel. I can't help but wonder what the "weekend" record is for the road teams that play Wednesday and then Sat/Sun. I could imagine that many have gone 0-2.
The football games at 7PM may be a bit hard on the fans, but the new basketball schedule seems too hard on the student-athletes.

Given that the tournament's in Vegas this year, I'm predicting that our nerds unlike the other Pac-12 ballers will avoid the distractions of the Bellagio and Spearmint Rhino. And as a result, Stanford will win the Pac-12 tournament. Yes I said it.

If I had been at my laptop the past two days, I probably would have contributed to the "I've got a feeling the team's turned the corner" discussion. Put me in the camp of those who felt like the team was really starting to show some improvement based on the US.C and UCLA games. I only watched about 10 minutes of the 1st half last night but after seeing our guys burned on backdoor cuts on 3-4 different plays, I had seen all I needed.
I do think this team is capable of pulling off a big upset (they almost had Arizona, remember), but they're nowhere near the consistency you need to challenge for a conference championship.

I don't share your optimism. I think that on the bubble the committee will choose consistency over inconsistency. I think Stanford needs to beat both Utah & Colorado AND win at least one game in the P12 tourney.
At the program level (vs. this season), even if they do make the tourney this season it will likely be at least two more before they get a sniff at returning, probably three. The cupboard is awfully bare. With the bench this short, it's pretty clear they only have about 3 non-seniors on his roster that merit PT outside of garbage time. The incoming frosh will make an impact in 2015-16 at the earliest, most likely the year after. Between the current seniors and that recruiting class, there's just not very much there there.

My take - it brought to mind the phrase "Less than the sum of its parts." Which I think is about preparation and planning, and at least at this point less about execution.
A taste of the lowlights:
Dwight Powell spending most of the game on offense camped outside the three point line on offense (against a team whose entire front line was in foul trouble most of the game). And still managing to shoot 2 for 9 and miss a dunk.
At one point in the first half, Stanford had twice as many turnovers (8) as field goals (4). And it wasn't great defense by ASU, unless you mean simply sagging into the paint and picking off absolutely terrible bounce passes (as in, thrown from about 7 feet away with no space and bouncing at the post player's feet).
Chasson Randle fouling out by committing four fouls over the course of 6 minutes in the second half. The last because the Sun Devils were smart enough to run enough offense to get Jahii Carson isolated on him after several switches. Of course, this was after Randle missed two layups in a row in the dagger sequence for Stanford's hopes - Powell misses a FT that would've cut the lead to 9, and ASU gets an easy layup in transition. Randle reenters, misses a layup and gives up a layup to Carson because he doesn't want to foul him. Randle misses another layup, and ASU, realizing that Stanford is still switching screens, runs Carson off screens to get him isolated on Randle, who then fouls him and exits with 7 minutes left and the lead back out to 16.
All in all, the Sun Devils looked like a team, covering for each other on defense and moving the ball on offense. Stanford looked like a collection of variously talented players who occasionally worked together in pairs or trios but almost never seemed to be moving as a unit.
Brown's shooting performance was great, but he, like every other starter, turned the ball over (in a really quirky looking box score, all 5 starters had 3 turnovers apiece; no other player turned the ball over.)Â Lemons, Gage and others off the bench tried hard and did their best, but with Gage not shooting well, none of them is really an offensive threat, which means when we go to the bench, the offense gets even more predictable - ASU got a lot of offensive fouls called last night by simply waiting for Stanford to get late in the shot clock and launch themselves at the basket.
So, Stanford just lost the margin for error they gained by beating UCLA. They now need to win 2 out of their last 3, and I think at least 1 in the Pac-12 tourney - if they don't, they'll finish with 12 losses, and I think they'd need at least 22 wins to overcome that.

At one point in the first half, Stanford had twice as many turnovers (8) as field goals (4). And it wasn't great defense by ASU, unless you mean simply sagging into the paint and picking off absolutely terrible bounce passes (as in, thrown from about 7 feet away with no space and bouncing at the post player's feet).
Chasson Randle fouling out by committing four fouls over the course of 6 minutes in the second half. The last because the Sun Devils were smart enough to run enough offense to get Jahii Carson isolated on him after several switches. Of course, this was after Randle missed two layups in a row in the dagger sequence for Stanford's hopes - Powell misses a FT that would've cut the lead to 9, and ASU gets an easy layup in transition. Randle reenters, misses a layup and gives up a layup to Carson because he doesn't want to foul him. Randle misses another layup, and ASU, realizing that Stanford is still switching screens, runs Carson off screens to get him isolated on Randle, who then fouls him and exits with 7 minutes left and the lead back out to 16.
All in all, the Sun Devils looked like a team, covering for each other on defense and moving the ball on offense. Stanford looked like a collection of variously talented players who occasionally worked together in pairs or trios but almost never seemed to be moving as a unit.
Brown's shooting performance was great, but he, like every other starter, turned the ball over (in a really quirky looking box score, all 5 starters had 3 turnovers apiece; no other player turned the ball over.)Â Lemons, Gage and others off the bench tried hard and did their best, but with Gage not shooting well, none of them is really an offensive threat, which means when we go to the bench, the offense gets even more predictable - ASU got a lot of offensive fouls called last night by simply waiting for Stanford to get late in the shot clock and launch themselves at the basket.
So, Stanford just lost the margin for error they gained by beating UCLA. They now need to win 2 out of their last 3, and I think at least 1 in the Pac-12 tourney - if they don't, they'll finish with 12 losses, and I think they'd need at least 22 wins to overcome that.

No, however it seemed that Muir wanted to keep Dawkins and indicated that the team needed to be a Pac-12 title contender and NCAA tournament participant. A quick look at the standings and Bracketology pages suggests that Stanford is meeting the minimum standards. If Dawkins was able to save his job in 2012-2013, then at this point I believe he is safe here in 2013-2014. The team is close enough to the tournament, that I WANT to believe the guys can finish strong and get into the tournament.
Clearly, the team could lose its last 5 (4 regular season, first round Pac-12) games and Dawkins could get fired, but I believe it is more likely that Dawkins will be the coach in 2014-2015 (at least as long as Muir is making the call).

The contrast between the ASU and Stanford offenses was stark. ASU's ball movement was mind-numbingly fast; Stanford's was mind-numbingly slow. All in all, my mind was pretty numb after watching most of the game. I finally turned it off in disgust when Randle fouled out.

Not much point to arguing whether 1-3 or 2-2 gets us in. I hope we beat Arizona and sweep at home so we don't need to find out. If we don't, we will learn soon enough whether the team has done enough to make the Dance. The good news is that the road loss to ASU didn't affect our RPI or projected seeding much. According to ESPN, both remain about the same.
