I'm guilty as charged, jacketree, but, since we're having fun with place names, I'd like to point out that the major city in Colombia is actually Santiago de Cali, and Columbia is the gem of the ocean--that one is for the Civil War buffs in the crowd.

I wonder if there's a parallel Colombian blog on which someone from Santiago de Cali is complaining about how folks have bastardized the full name of his or her city?

In any case, no more copying and pasting from David Lombardi and no more abbreviations for me. From now on, I will refer to my adopted home as California! Unless, of course, I'm talking about  SoCal... or NorCal... or that rival university in the East Bay...

Things have changed.  Did you miss the Foothill Freeway?  Artesia?  Riverside?  Foothills Expressway?  Laguna?  Escondido?  And at least 10 others.  Now its just numbers.  Just like phone numbers.  Back in the day my phone number was EDgewood 5-4568; now its all numbers including an area code I dont even recognize :)

Some in LA have names, but no one uses them.  As a practical matter the names usually don't extend throughout the massive LA Metroplex.  Those names are also rarely used by various internet mapping and direction services.  The number is much easier, especially since the directional signs only have numbers now.  So to tell someone to take "the Hollywood Freeway" would require them to already know a lot about where they want to go. 

I think I live near at least one or two of these freeways with names but few ever refer to them by any of their names.  I honestly don't know which highways have which names.  I guess maybe the names are a way to prove that you are some type of LA Area native.

The 405, the 5, the 101, the 10, etc.  That is the way they are identified.  Well...at least by anyone that is younger than, say, 55 with a job (and a commute).

There might be an SD/LA distinction on this, as we refer(-ed? I grew up in SD but haven't consistently lived there since 2005 and freshman year on the Farm) to the freeways by their name + directional distinction. 5 North/South, 805 N/S, 56 E/W, etc.

There is one interesting Nor Cal/So Cal phenomena that I've observed and it relates to the use of the article "the" with the major freeway used. Specifically, people in San Diego refer to the 5 freeway as "THE 5" and to the 101 as "101" ("I'm taking THE 5 to SF;" "I'm taking 101 to SF"). At any rate, they are about 4.5 hours apart, given that Eureka and 101 are on the coast and the 5 is in the middle of the state.  Redding is probably the closest town on the 5 and it is 3 hours from Eureka
