I seem to recall that Grace Mashore was also from National Cathedral, an elite private school in DC.  In fact, I was there just a couple of weeks ago looking at...the National Cathedral!  But you folks do not want to know the details about the world's fifth largest gothic cathedral, I am sure....

According to the article, more than a dozen schools offered her but she discouraged all but the most prestigious academic institutions, which may explain why she did not get more notice.  It came down to Harvard vs. Stanford for her.

We left other girls wide open, double teaming Sniezek every time she touched it. Still, we couldn't really stop her. Defensively, she absolutely changes the game. I’ve never seen more of a one-man wrecking crew. Every time I watch her, she makes a couple of plays that I can only marvel at.”

I am very struck by the number of point guards we have been recruiting of late.  It is such a complete reversal of our situation from a few years ago, when we were always the tallest team but lacked ball handling.  As fans, I think we are in for some fairly interesting changes in style of play.

I learned that there is a real dispute amongst architectural historians on how to categorize it.  It was planned during the gothic revival period, but unlike nearly all the other neo-gothic buildings coming from the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Princeton's chapel among them, or the University of Chicago) this building stayed unusually true to the English Gothic style of the fourteenth century.  For example, the architect took deliberate action to avoid making the lines too perfect and thus betray its modern heritage.  On the other hand, what is obviously modern about it are the scenes depicted in the relief sculpture and stained glass, including the space window focused on a moon rock, or the depiction of famous Americans rather than saints.  That is certainly not 14th Century!  In any case, since I have not taken my daughter to Europe, this is as good as it gets in giving her the experience of a Gothic cathedral. 

And this is really off topic, except for the fact that Marta Sniezek goes to school in its shadow every day!

Our 2014 roster currently has 12 players listed, and we know Brooks, McPhee and Kaylee Johnson are coming in to take the three remaining scholarships, so we start all even. 

There is a little room for doubt, though, even there.  I think Bri Roberson did not initially have a scholarship, but she and Ruef took the two freed up when Toni and Ally medically retired.  Ruef of course is now gone, and it is obvious that Bri is going to be able to keep that scholarship for a second year since it would otherwise be wasted.  But I do not know if Tara made a multi-year commitment to Bri or not, or whether she was thought to be a walk-on who would get any extra scholarships that happened to be available.  That would be private information between them.  So we just don't know if there might be some extra flexibility in the scholarships or not.   

For 2015 Greenfield, Orrange, Payne, and Bonnie Samuelson complete their eligibility, so that means a minimum of 4 to give to the incoming class of  2015.  Jasmine Camp and Alex Green are part of that famous "sixpack" but they each have a medical redshirt so either or both could potentially be back for a fifth year.  I have heard Amy say quite emphatically, however, that a fifth year is never guaranteed to any athlete--that the decision to grant someone a year beyond their graduation is based exclusively on the best interests of the team.  (So, for example, Michelle Harrison did not get a fifth year, but did receive Tara's help in transferring to Utah for a final year of eligibility there.)  So that means we could have up to 6 for 2015--even 7 if the Roberson scholarship is not promised.  But given that 2016 looks more promising than 2015, I would not be at all surprised if both Jasmine and Alex got an extra year to save those two scholarship for 2016.  Amber will have graduated and having a couple of extra senior guards could not hurt.  So assuming that happens and assuming that Bri keeps her scholarship too, that would give us 4 scholarships for 2015, two of which have been committed so far.

For 2016 Camp and Green will be out of eligibility assuming they were given fifth years, and Tess Picknell will graduate, giving us a total of 3 to award, one of which has been committed so far (barring any medical retirements or other unforeseen developments.)

One other thing to keep in mind--the fact that a player has committed does not necessarily mean they are getting a scholarship.  Almost always it does, but as with Bri Roberson we know that a walk-on can commit and then be funded as scholarships come available.  Our latest recruit, for example, was seriously considering Harvard which offers no athletic scholarships.  Would she have come to Stanford for its combination of basketball and academics even without a scholarship, but as a preferred walk-on?  Interesting question.

I am naive, but it seems to me all scholarships, for all schools, ought to be for four years, as long as the athlete shows up, puts in effort, follows the rules, etc.  Harder on the coaches?  Yes.  Requires more thoughtful appraisals.  But if mandated for all schools would be, I think, more fair to the kids.

I just added Nora Kiesler at the top of the list after finding a fairly recent article indicating that we have offered her a scholarship and that she has it down to us and Louisville.  A 6'6" post.  This short video shows her scoring.  She is easy enough to find on the floor!

McWilliams says her top five are Oregon State, UCLA, Stanford, Washington and Arizona State, but with the change in coaching staffs at Oregon, the Ducks are also in the mix. Geography played a brobdingnagian role in McWilliams’ finalists, as she wants to play close to home.

Her father is a coach, and the family apparently knows Scott Rueck fairly well.  I think she is genuinely still deciding, by the sounds of it.

Also of interest is her dedication to playing guard despite her 6'2" frame. 

Even though she grew to be 6-2, McWilliams has always played guard. Nick McWilliams said she learned the game competing against boys, which paid dividends now that she plays guard despite being one of the tallest players on the floor.

A review of Marta from this past week's EYBL tourney. 

A lot of what the defense gives is a result of the attack from 2015 point guard Marta Sniezek.  A 5-7 fireball, she’s without a doubt one of those you would rather play with than against.  Sniezek is smart, skilled and competitive on par with anyone she’ll line up against.  She also has 30 assists more than any other player in the EYBL.

A lot of what the defense gives is a result of the attack from 2015 point guard Marta Sniezek.  A 5-7 fireball, she’s without a doubt one of those you would rather play with than against.  Sniezek is smart, skilled and competitive on par with anyone she’ll line up against.  She also has 30 assists more than any other player in the EYBL.
