My wife of 45 years and I have been watching "the Sixties" and tonite was about the English Invasion.  OMG.  We danced the entire hour, so many memories . . . . Towards the end they talked a out the Beach Boys, which was the American answer to the British.  I don't know about the restof the country, but during our high school days the leading radio shows of the day (KFWB and KRLA) held regular vote-offs between the two.  Rubber Soul, Magical Mystery Tour and, of course that magical intro on the Ed Sullivan Show.  You youngsters can pass this on by but those of us of a certain age will never forget.  Thanks for listening (and if you missed the series it is worth seeking out.)

I guess my point is that the Beatles are not just a 60s band. Their music is still influencing kids today who are "discovering" them for the first time. What a gift!

( Or did pop radio's arbitrary song rotation dictate ours?)  Anyway.  My parents had some Sinatra records.  Left me cold.  Nancy Sinatra's execrable  "These Boots Were Made for Walkin'" record in top-40 didn't help the Sinatra family's standing with the teen me.  Fast forward to post-grad, living back in Pasadena.  Best friend enrolled at USC film school.  Comes back raving about Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets (which featured a very young Robt. De Niro).  So, he drags me to it.  Come to close credits and it's done with a Sinatra tune "Summer Wind".  Blew me away.  My folks would have howled.  Me walking out of the theater asking my buddy who that singer was.  Finally got to hear the Sinatra that my folks' generation knew.  I didn't go out and buy Sinatra records,  but with the advent of iTunes & Amazon, have been picking a selective library of individual Sinatra songs.  Didn't care much for his persona and image,  but the man could sing.

Nice article in the New Yorker a few weeks back about Michael Nesmith and getting back with the Monkees for an fan/autograph date . Did not know his mother invented 'Liquid Paper' and left him $25 million the better off....without Monkee money. I guess she got out in time...before the digital deluge.

I was born after much of the music mentioned so far, however, I have always been partial to the Kinks. They are, in my mind, the most under rated of the "British Invasion" groups. While their attempts at theatrical albums undermined their popularity, they made a massive comeback in the late seventies and early 80's. I always had a thing for older rock growing up, I used to play my dad's Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly albums incessantly.

During my teen years though, I became a very big fan of 2 primary genres, Heavy Metal and the new genres (at the time) of Gangsta and Dirty rap. In fact, my senior year at the farm I audited Bandura's graduate seminar on violence in the media and my final paper compared the impacts of music and music videos from various genres on violent behaviors in youth.

My all time favorite song in high school (which is a cover of a song by Diamond Head):

Not Joe Cocker kind of lurching.  The banging-into-random-stuff kind of lurching.  Anyway he was drinking some bottled beverage and managed to spill/splash/spray a decent amount of it.  Some time in there they sang Demon Alcohol.  Which kinda made sense and would have made it great performance art... or just a drunk guy doing rock and roll. Hard to tell.  Good concert, though.

I saw a concert by Stephen Stills at Red Rocks Amphitheater outside of Denver and it sounds similar, at least in terms of inebriation levels.  Stills came out at the start with a full bottle of Jack Daniels (he was already pretty lit) and it was gone by the time he was done playing.  Un-freakin'-believable!

But what was even harder to believe was the quality of his playing.  Between songs it seemed as though he was having a difficult time just standing up.  His speech was slurred and he was very difficult to understand.  But one of his encores was "Black Queen" which he played to absolute perfection.  It's too bad he didn't get to hear it.  ;D
