I guess I'm the only one here who listened to and saw James Brown, Ray Charles, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding and Tina Turner.  I have always loved Van Morrison and Eric Burton.Â

When I was in my teens and early 20s, I used to go with my Dad to the Keeneland Summer Yearling Thoroughbred Sale in Lexington, Kentucky. He was a VIP in the horse racing business and was invited to all the private parties hosted by the big thoroughbred horse breeding farms. These parties were black tie and always held in big fancy tents on immaculate stud farms. Along with the gourmet food prepared by celebrity chefs, there was always big name entertainment. I got to dance to KC & the Sunshine Band, James Brown, and Earth, Wind and Fire. The best, however, was Burt Bacharach by himself with just his piano.Â
In my junior year at Stanford, I was an intern for my congressman in DC. That summer I was the only white boy in sight that attended the DC Throwdown at RFK Stadium. It was an all day concert featuring Rick James, WAR, Cameo, Zapp, One Way, Lakeside, Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force, etc. I had to leave before dark because I was being threatened with great bodily harm by some fellow concert attendees that didn't appreciate my skin tone.Â

Constant music through 0500 Monday morning. Two and a half hours from base. AWOL comes to mind. Seems like there were only a half dozen port-a-parties. It seemed like 100 very humid degrees. The fire department hosed everyone down, somewhere over 100k people. It was more of a shower than a cooling event until the mud pools formed, then it was just fun! The chain link fences that defined the perimeter of the venue were knocked down sometime on Saturday. After that it was free for everyone that showed up. Word of Mouth was the primary social media in those days.Â
I was a very fortunate 20 year old that 4th of July weekend in 1969.
I am a very fortunate 65 year old in 2014.

Starts in the '60s and runs through....now. If you like Neil Young it's worth a 54 minute investment of your time when you have a chance.

Remembered it now after Thomas Erdelyi (better known as Tommy Ramone) just passed at 65. We tried to emulate the Ramones, but with brass instruments and a drum kit. (That went about as well as it sounds it would.) At about 38 minutes of the Neil Young retrospective he talks about the Ramones. Not surprisingly he loved them. Somewhat (somewhat?!) surprisingly he also loved Flock of Seagulls. (At least he seems dead serious to me.) Shortly after the Ramone discussion there is a minute or two of Neil jamming with Devo with Hey, Hey, My, My (Into the Black). How cool is that? I remember passing friends in the halls of Wheat Ridge Senior High School and asking: "Are we not men?" You know the response.
If I ever had to narrow the Desert Island Album down to one, I'm not sure I could decide between Neil Young's On the Beach and Los Lobos' Kiko. Although in the main I'd prefer to be stranded on a Dessert Island.
