When I was in college I became infatuated with this one particular girl. To be honest, I kind of considered her a bit out of my league, but I convinced myself that if I loved her, really showed how worthy and devoted I could be, everything could work out and she would be swept along by my passion. We actually ended up going out for a while, but, predictably, it did not end well. A good lesson learned the hard way.
I sometimes think that this is the psychological process going on with some of the recruits that court Stanford. A sense that, if they just devote themselves to the university, say the right things, show enough passion, that they can sweep admissions off its feet and everything can work out (even if, inside, they have nagging doubts).
