I never understood why Stanford and Low APR U weren't just placed in the South, and Colorado and Utah in the North.  I get that the two new teams really wanted an annual trip to Southern California for recruiting, but that could have been done by giving Colorado and Utah the same every year matchup against U$€ and UCLA as Stanford and Low APR U have now.  Although playing the southern California schools every year is nice for the rivalry, we have lost the rivalry in the standings.

My understanding was this was negotiated with CO and Utah up front and a stipulation of joining the conference.

Rumor was Larry Scott promised Utah and/or Colorado that they would be in the same division as the LA schools. Nothing confirmed.

That seems strange, as Utah certainly didn't need any enticement to join the Pac - and really Colorado didn't either.

Either way, it's clear that Utah and Colorado - or some alliance of schools more nervous about Stanford and c.a.l than Utah and Colorado - ended up with more political pull on this issue than we had.
