This isn't that complicated, is it?  You set the expectation or standard or performance.  Give the coach 4-5 years to meet it.  If he doesn't, you replace him with someone else.  If the next one meets the standard you try to retain him.  If he doesn't, you replace him too.  Rinse, repeat until you get the right guy.

I really don't think one NCAA tournament appearance in seven seasons is Stanford's standard or performance, so keeping Dawkins for another year sends a clear message that winning just isn't that important in the hoops program.
