It may be hard to figure out how either kept their jobs so long, but it doesn't look like ASU is an example of an aggressive AD firing the basketball coach for less than exemplary achievements.

I like the optimistic view, but my reaction to your post was: oh god, so we've got 2 more years of this before an AD will pull the trigger?

Perhaps the decision was helped by the fact that ASU has a new AD as of Jan 2014. Interestingly, ASU had just re-signed Sendek to a contract extension in Dec of 2014. So the new AD was willingly to quickly pull the trigger on signing an extension and then to scuttle the deal 4 months later. Kind of bizarre.
