Two things about the American public school system have always mystified me - having grown up in another country (northwards).
One is the guidance counselor as gate keeper to college thing. Just didn't exist for us. I guess they expected that if we were qualified to go to college we would be able to write letters asking for applications. I can see why some guidance could be helpful, but it still seems awfully foreign to me to trust one's future to somebody trying to oversee several hundred kids a year.
The other is buses zipping around all over town, eating up school budgets and determining the start/end times of the school day ... but that is quite another story.
