I find this sort of odd. Would he not have been the likely starter next season?

I had the same reaction.  I suspect he either saw the writing on the wall that he was going to lose playing time to Marx or he wants a chance to play in GT's triple option -- a rare offense in modern college football that allows a FB to play a role beyond just blocking and obvious short-yardage situations.
