I'd guess that had it not been for that illegal kick return -- which scuttled a winning season and a Peach Bowl bid -- Paul Wiggin wouldn't have been fired after the following season. He would have been just a season away from our first bowl game in 12 years. And perhaps we wouldn't have gone 1-10, either. Wiggin seemed shell-shocked the whole season. Years later, there was a piece in the Chron in which he recalled telling his wife after the Big Cheat, "Nothing's ever going to be the same for us here." Perhaps that turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
