Osborne is single-handedly reponsible for my sight-unseen assumption that Nebraska is the single most detestable place in America. He was later elected to Congress based on little more than his coaching record. Then he returned to the university as AD. And last I heard he was one of the voters on the college football playoffs. I'm not going to defend Osborne's decision to reinstate Phillips for the Fiesta Bowl game. I disagreed with it at the time and I disagree with it now. He and the team certainly didn't need Phillips to win that game (Ahman Green had been phenomenal as a freshman back-up) and the results confirmed that.Â
I grew up in Lincoln, my dad played for the Huskers and did radio broadcasts of the games while we lived in Lincoln. I played basketball with Osborne's son. Through both my dad and his football ties and my being a teammate of Osborne's son, our families were friendly socially. I believed then and believe now, based on what I know personally of Osborne, that he made the decision to reinstate Phillips in an attempt to help Phillips, not the team.Â
You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I thought I'd offer mine. It's a little less sight-unseen than yours. I think you'd have a much different impression if you knew the man.Â
