I'd Sharpied Stanford in for third in the Pac-12s after they finished today, and SC had just two holes to play. The 17th at the Palouse course is a challenging par four, but is a two-shot par 5, a certain par at worse.
But at worse was just what happened to our beloved Trojans. On 17, they carded one par, two bogeys, a double, and a triple: +7.
Perhaps undone by that disaster, they went two-over on 18.Â
Stanford in second (+6 to USC's +10), nation's #3 ASU at -3.Â
Maverick McNeally, son of the famous Scott McNeally, continues to be Stanford's breakout athlete of the year. He leads the event at nine-under, four strokes clear of the Cal and Oregon guys in second. He's been so hot that the Wall Street Journal recently mentioned him as a possible future challenger to Rory McElroy and Jordan Spieth. Some story, this kid; the number three guy in his Stanford recruiting class has at shot at being the country's #1 player this season--just two years later.
