...why?
Didn't seem to like the idea of rooming with non athletes and, mostly, fell asleep in class. Really just making a joke about falling asleep while trying to make a good impression.

I actually didn't glean any of that. To me he seemed nonplussed about the idea of rooming with non-athletes.

And falling asleep in class?

I think if you looked at the bell curve of my grades, my two 8 a.m. classes had the worst grades. Neither of my sons took 8 a.m. classes (one of them had a 10 a.m. class as his earliest class, and he complained about that). So I'm not all that concerned about someone who drops off in an 8 a.m. class. And his comments on non-athletes seem pretty right on with respect to what most athletes (and other well-lopsided candidates) seem to think about the standard world-class student at Stanford.
Not a lock, for sure. But we used to say that if we could get them to visit, they would come.Â
Judging from the look in his eyes, my youngest definitely had that feeling. Sort of the opposite of the feeling he had at U$ :o, when he was frowning and shaking his head from the moment he stepped on the campus. Five minutes in: "Just so you know, I'm not coming here." Older son said he'd rather go to a JC for two years than U$ :o, and he'd had three very close friends go there.
