These things are mostly a matter of economic status.
At a university where a lot of students work, early morning classes are still sometimes popular, since some students like to finish school early enough to go to an afternoon job, and since working-class students are simply used to having to get up for jobs, summer work, the school bus, etc.Â
But I have noticed as my university has become much more selective with admissions, student willingness to come to early morning classes has gone down. I am sure part of it is general cultural change--the proliferation of the internet and online social media/video gaming has destroyed a lot of sleep schedules. But I also think that working class kids tend to be more disciplined.
In any case, I used to teach 730am classes--no longer. My students now complain that my 1030 class is too early.
