Some historical background on why Stanford did not win a championship in 1975-76:
The only teams that had the potential for winning a national title were men's tennis and water polo (there was no women's water polo in the NCAA back then.) Stanford had just started its dominance in men's tennis in 1974. But the NCAA championship was run in a different fashion. Players were invited individually for the singles and doubles championship. Their respective schools would earn points with each match win, with the "team" championship awarded to the school with the highest aggregate total. Hence, a school could win the national title with just a couple of players, as long as they advanced deep into the tournament. UCLA won as they had two strong players (Brian Teacher and Peter Fleming. Fleming became famous for being John McEnroe's doubles partner as a pro.)
The team match format as we know it was introduced in 1976-77. And yes, the Stanford men's tennis team won that.
