My older son scored the exact same on both the SAT and ACT (according to the concordance tables).  My younger son did better on the SAT after having been assured that he'd do better on the ACT.  One of his high school counselors told him that the ACT is more subject/achievement-oriented while the SAT focuses more on problem-solving and thinking skills.
