Its important to remember just how little a like means for many Facebook users. Someone who is generally uninterested in college football might watch the rose bowl, see something posted by stanford, and click like, or an Alabama fan might like stanford after they beat Oregon and put the Tide into the championship. That person is then a "fan" of Stanford. The article suggests (rightly) that this says more about a department's social media presence than anything else.
