A couple of years ago Harbaugh kicked TE Ben Ladner and WR/DB Chris Hobbs off the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.   Reports had it that the issue was drug use and that Harbaugh had spoken to both players and (again, reportedly) received assurances that they would not partake, leaving Harbaugh to smoke the entire bong\'s worth of sensemilla all by himself.   :D  But-- and this is where things get murky-- he reportedly got information from a source he trusted that they did not follow through on their assurances...so he dismissed them from the team.   Lots of brouhaha about neither getting to confront their accuser (the alleged informant)...which is a bit different than Hones case, where the cops were in active pursuit.

Apropos of nothing, this kind of judgment based upon indirect observation allows a pretty substantial amount of power to the accuser.  I understand that the players were on a short leash, but if one player disliked the two of them (or played behind them) went to the coach and swore on a stack of bibles that they were partaking, well....
