I knew quite a few of the Ralston era guys.  Ralston has superb assistants: Mike White, George Seiffert, Bill Walsh. For this team's ridiculous losses alone--to Air Force, San Jose State, and Duke--I wouldn't rank him with Shaw, and his career record (140-126) and record before and after Stanford does not seem to suggest more than above-averageness. 

That '71 team was incredibly talented--Sampson (#6 draft choice), Siemon (#10), Lazetich (#36), Merlo (#86), Poltl, Winesberry, Bunce, Jackie Brown  No reason for those guys to have lost any of these three games.  Totally unprepared.
