I agree with you that this kind of thing may undermine his authority, making him more "one of the guys." And anyone in a teaching/supervisory position knows a little distance between them and the people they are managing or teaching is valuable.
But I wonder: does Sark just want to be one of the guys? Is this, at root, a kind of maturity issue? If so, he may at heart feel like this "punishment" just reaffirms that he is "one of the guys". Maybe an ok guy to hang out with, but a leader and role model for young men?
