The lateral run with the "Aussie Style" kick actually does give more coverage time. This is needed since the kicks tend to be flatter. That style of kicking also leads to more chance of a forward rotation on the ball so it bounces forward more often than the traditional punt. They had a large segment on the advantages with Rich Rod on the local affiliate last week.
