From what I've read the most important thing is getting into new markets so you can increase your carriage fees. That's part of the reason the B1G added Rutgers and Maryland, they wanted those new markets. There wouldn't have been any real gaining adding, say, Miami (OH) or NIU, even though they might be about as competitive on the field.
But maybe that's all wrong, I don't know.
