While I understand the criticism of Leach's clock-management skills, did those have anything to do with this loss? If he had used up more time earlier in the game, Washington State would have had less time to get down the field on that last drive.

All they had to do was burn 3:30 for the win, but they were throwing low-probability pass downfield, and high risk sideline passes in their own territory.  As a result, they turned it over, and left us plenty of time to score -- too much as it turned out -- but they could have salted the game away on the pre-interception drive, or at least given Stanford half the time and twice the distance to score...
