The NFL policy is very real and very well defined. The training of the staff is the issue.
Having run 3 entrance gates at the last super bowl I will just say this. Contraband is well defined, strictly discussed and completely not trained for.
This was at the game, so if you are carrying something they do not like either give it up, hide it or complain loudly.
For instance, while dealing with the NFL staff and their "training staff" last year I was able to get a pistol, 2 knives and an Asp past their training staff and the "detectors" they use. At the game I got complaints for enforcing their rules and was told by NFL reps to "let it go" even though the items in question were clearly on the no go list.
If you want to get things into a "NFL" stadium you have to be creative or complain loudly. Customer service over safety seems to be their mantra.
