Agreed, but he also had the entire defense retreating into the box marking Morris in front of him.  He had about 7 yards of space, and could've stepped closer if he chose.  But trying to thread a ball through two center backs both with 3 yards of the passing lane you're trying to hit is probably lower-percentage than shooting from there.
