I wondered how and why Akron was such a men's soccer power. I see they have quite a long history of success but also while watching the game I saw a player from Brazil, then Spain, Portugal, Eritrea, New Zealand, England, and Israel.

It has to do with Akron's coach before their current one. He's a guy named Caleb Porter; he established Akron into a powerhouse through very good recruiting and an ability to get them to play some very pretty ball. Porter went to MLS (and just won the championship with Portland). Seems that Porter's successor built on that foundation.
