Personally I don't know if it's a great metric or not. I know almost nothing about it (think I saw it was play-based). It also gives a team a number like 19.3, which intuitively means nothing to me.

I think the FPI scores are, like S&P+, supposed to be some sort of "points per game above average" thing. I do know that you're supposed to be able to generate spreads by subtracting FPIs from each other.
