My recollection of the Lorig situation is that he never signed an LOI, which of course nobody is required to do. Lorig waited to make his decision until May 1, which is the deadline for all admitted students to decide whether to attend Stanford. At that point, he chose Stanford, but there was some confusion about his transmission of his acceptance of Stanford's offer. At first, it appeared that he had missed the May 1 deadline, which the admissions office viewed as a hard and fast deadline. But there was some extenuating circumstance (he may have been given incorrect advice by someone at Stanford about what he needed to do to accept), and he was allowed to accept Stanford's offer a day or two later. I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it.
If my memory is correct, then I would say that May 1 could be Stanford's real deadline.
