You are arguing hypotheticals 76. I believe that BobB let Trent twist in the wind a little and that Trent didn't like it and bolted.  The Lopi were delivered by their mother and by Monty before he took over. Yes, the former players did lobby for Trent's hire, but his recruiting was questionable, especially for such a prominent program (at the time). Who knows what BobB or Muir would have done?
The fact is that JD is 1 for 8! He has taken a top tier basketball program and coached it down to a level of mediocrity, and he's done it with lightening speed.  The fanbase has voted with their feet and Maples is an empty shell of its once proud self. As others have pointed out, JD is a nice guy (I've met him and would agree) and a career assistant coach, at best. He's had his chances, more than enough, and he can't get it done. Unlike football when Harbaugh took over, we knew with hoops that the program could compete at the highest levels. Did I expect him to go 7 for 8? No. The quality of play and player development is not where it needs to be the results, or lack thereof, speak volumes. I'm ever the optimist (as a true Stanford fan), but I've hit my limit. Muir is now becoming the target and I worry what that will do to the athletic program overall. Recall that Ted's "Buddys" were his undoing...
